Border Line: The Craft of Fine Art
Mikhail Zakin Gallery
January 27 - February 24, 2012

The Mikhail Zakin Gallery at The Art School at Old Church is excited to present Border Line, a group exhibition of contemporary artists and blurring the lines of traditional notions of art and craft. The exhibit is on view through February 24, 2012.

Is it art or is it craft? This age old question still haunts the corridors of art schools and beyond into the professional and theoretical musings of critics and theorists. There are as many opinions on this subject as there are grains of sand. Traditionally, craft is considered to be safe, working within the parameters of a specific form or technique, while art is considered to be stretching and bending a medium to a point where a deeper meaning and emotion can come forward through the work. This dichotomy is convenient for many, but ultimately, it is the artists themselves that pay the least attention to this circular debate.

The artists brought together for the Border Line exhibit are each using traditional mediums and themes in new and inventive ways, turning accepted notions of art and craft inside out. Through their techniques, styles and subject matters, each of the artists are forging their own path into the future of art, making their own history.
